Weyermann® Crop Report 2025

After a more than successful harvest in 2024, we are more than happy to present, once again, outstanding results for this year’s crop.

This report is based on the data out of our own direct recordings, from local supply partner, and from neighboring regions around our malt houses. This season’s acreage of spring barley in Germany is estimated at around 300,000 hectares. Our long-standing supply partners have once again followed our pre-contract offer for this harvest and cultivated the malting barley varieties we requested.

„This year’s crop impressively demonstrates how much our long-standing partnerships, and the diligent work of the farmers can achieve – despite challenging conditions, a remarkable yield has been obtained.“

– Thomas Kraus-Weyermann, CEO

Optimal Conditions for Top Quality – Sowing Conditions

The sowing conditions for the spring barley 2025 earlier this year proved ideal. Between the end of February and the end of March, sowing could be carried out early and efficiently under optimal soil conditions. Sufficient soil moisture in combination with mild temperatures supported a uniform and rapid growth of the plants.

Strong Plants Despite Spring Drought – Growth Conditions

The spring drought posed a challenge, yet the plants reacted with strong root growth. This enabled them to access water from deeper soil layers and initiate a favorable growth phase. In addition, the spring barley benefited from cool temperatures in May, and the timely, widespread rainfall at the beginning of June. Conditions during the grain-filling phase were particularly favorable, as the required rainfall arrived at just the right time. The recommended varieties Barke, Isaria, Amidala, Lexy, and Leandra dominated the cultivation spectrum.

Challenging Harvest with Positive Results – Harvest Conditions

Harvesting began in mid-July. In the early-maturing regions, at least 80% of the total yield had already been brought in by the end of the month. In later regions, the main part of the harvest took place between August 5 and 14. The weather in July, marked by thunderstorms and rain showers, posed a particular challenge to harvesting operations. All the more remarkable, therefore, was the achievement of all those involved, who, with the highest flexibility, ensured that the grain could be harvested and collected dry and in healthy condition during the few available days. The raw materials collected directly during harvest are kept healthy throughout the year under optimal storage conditions in our generously sized silos.

Surprisingly High Qualities and Yields

Despite the weather conditions, this year’s crop shows itself at its best – with encouragingly high yields and convincing quality, as confirmed by our collection sites in Franconia and Thuringia. Protein values average 10.5% and thus lie in the optimal range. Whole Grain values reach up to 92% directly from the field, depending on the variety. Germination capacity is excellent, providing a strong basis for the quality of our Weyermann® malts. Naturally dry harvest conditions were achieved, with average values depending on the harvest phase ranging from 11% to a maximum of 13.5%. In summary, as of now, we can establish that a good supply and very high raw material qualities can be expected in this campaign.

Regional Partnerships Ensure Supply

A central element of our raw material strategy is close cooperation with our long-standing agricultural partners. To guarantee consistent supply security, we work directly with local barley producers and conclude targeted cultivation contracts with them. Short transport routes, sustainable farming methods, and a high degree of care in cultivation ensure quality from the field to the finished malt. At the Weyermann® sites in Leesau and Clingen, collection takes place under strict hygiene standards and with state-of-the-art technology – ensuring consistently high quality throughout the year. These reliable structures provide the basis for planning and guarantee the maintenance of high standards along the entire supply chain, forming the foundation for Weyermann® malts of the highest excellence.

Weyermann® extends its best wishes to all customers for much joy in brewing, baking, and distilling with the 2025 crop.
