Weyermann® Woman Power: Following in the Footsteps of Female Pioneers
This week, a special edition of the Weyermann® Woman Power series took place: a themed walking tour under the motto “Bamberg’s Women. From Empress to Malt Queen.” The tour, designed for interested Weyerfrauen, was led by our colleague Sabine Vinograski, an experienced Weyermann® guide and former city tour guide.
Starting Point: Weyermann® Shop Living & Drinking
The event began with a warm welcome from Sabine Weyermann in front of the Weyermann® Shop Living & Drinking. As a special highlight, the managing director provided personal insights into her early years at the traditional Weyermann® site. Participants had the unique opportunity to interview her about her experiences as a “Weyerfrau.”
Strolling Through Bamberg’s History – Traces of Women Throughout the City
Sabine Vinograski then guided the group through Bamberg’s picturesque gardeners’ district, past historic spots, along Königstraße to the Green Market, and by the “Humsera.” The Humsera was a true Bamberg original: a witty and sharp-tongued gardener, famous for her quick wit and her presence at the city’s weekly market, where she sold fresh vegetables for decades. Belonging to the Hums family in the Heiliggrabstraße, the Humsera stands as a symbol for the confident, down-to-earth, and often outspoken legacy of Bamberg’s women.
Proceeding to the Obere Brücke, the group enjoyed an impressive view of the statue of Empress Kunigunde—a woman who made history not only as the wife of Emperor Heinrich II, but also as a co-founder of the Bishopric of Bamberg. Kunigunde was renowned for her political and spiritual engagement. Her passionate advocacy for the city and her famous “trial by ordeal”—walking unharmed over glowing ploughshares to prove her innocence—remain powerful symbols of resilience and feminine strength in Bamberg to this day.
Modern Pioneers: Sabine Weyermann
Centuries after Kunigunde, women in Bamberg continued to take on pioneering roles. A modern example is Sabine Weyermann herself. As Managing Director of the Weyermann® malting company, she combines innovation and close ties with her team with strong dedication to the advancement of women in the brewing industry. With vision and respect for tradition, Sabine Weyermann unites the historical heritage of this family business with modern values such as sustainability, openness, and equality. In an industry long dominated by men, she sets new impulses, confidently forges her own path, and serves as a role model for generations to come. She is the “Malt Queen” of today, leading the company into the future together with her husband, Thomas Kraus-Weyermann, and their daughter, Franziska Weyermann.
The walk continued to the church Obere Pfarre and past the statues of the “Ten Foolish Virgins,” ending at our valued customer, the brewery restaurant Greifenklau.
Franconian Hospitality and Culinary Delights
At Greifenklau, Sabine Weyermann joined the group again for a convivial dinner. In the comfortable setting, the Weyerfrauen enjoyed local Franconian cuisine and exchanged impressions of the day. To crown the evening, participants were treated to an exclusive tour of the Greifenklau brewery with brewmaster Sigmund Brockard. From the historic brewhouse to the fermentation cellar, he provided fascinating insights into traditional brewing—an impressive experience within the walls of Laurenziplatz 20.
The evening was filled with inspiration, local history, and true women’s power, leaving lasting memories. Our heartfelt thanks go to Sabine Vinograski, whose expertise and enthusiasm made this walk such a memorable experience.
Special thanks also go to our managers for the invitation, to our boss for her valuable insights, and to the brewery for outstanding service and delicious food. A particular thank you to Mr. Brockard for the exciting and informative brewery tour.
