From Worldwar I to Worldwar II and the years in between
The Company in precarious times
1914 - 1945

1914 Ceremonial inauguration of the St. Otto Church, the spiritual reference point of the Weyermann-Family since having a new place in Memmelsdorfer Street. Construction and finishing are generous financed by the Weyermann-Family.

1914 While the company is in the prime of success, the World War starts. The problems with alimentation, the allocation of materials in these long years make trading impossible, the export in other countries stops. Allocated deliveries inside the country and the army demand make the Weyermann Company staying alive through these years. Mrs. Councillor of Commerce Sabine Weyermann has her own military hospital in the Luitpold-School, financed also of her own. She earns a lot of attention fort her engagement. At the beginning of World War I Bamberg counts 48.063 residents, 40.361 of these are catholic, 6.400 prostestants and 1.177 jewish.

1916 Rudolf Weyermann marries the 20 years old businessman-daughter Adele Ankenbrand from Eltmann. Their son Rolf is born in 1919 in Würzburg.

1917 Carl Friedrich Bernhard Weyermann marries in his first marriage Margarete Baumann, daughter of a Bamberg brewery owner, who was born in 1894. In 1921 they get the divorce. Both have a child, Johann, born in 1918. Called Hans, the son spends his youth and school time in the convent of Ettal. After military he passes his apprenticeship in Leimershof near Bamberg.

1917 The deficiency of alimentation, need and deprivation are a sign of the years of war and of the time after, like in the whole German Empire and also in the city of Bamberg.

1918 In 1918, after the November Revolution, Germany becomes a republic. Becoming a so called Freistaat, the Free State of Bavaria, the Bavarian country is no longer a Kingdom. Because of the civil commotions the government moves from Munich to Bamberg and passes here the first constitution of the Bavarian State, the “Bamberger Verfassung”. The Versailles Contract blames the exclusive responsibility of World War I on the German Empire, determining the restitution of all financial damages. The domestically atmosphere of the young Weimar Republic becomes disordered and let radical groups grow stronger.

1919 On the 5th of January Adele Weyermann, wife of Rudolf Weyermann, becomes the mother of a son called Rolf, following the family tradition.

1919 On the 25th of October, 1919 Johann Baptist Weyermann passes away in a sanatorium in Blankenburg/Thuringia. Being well known of what he did for the company development from the very first beginning to a worldwide activity, the era of the companies founder ends. His widow leads the company together with the sons Rudolf and Carl and the daughter Eva. They readopt the old, former contacts to friends and costumers and reconstruct the company trade in a fabulous manner.

1922 Carl Weyermann is going to marry once again. Franziska Brunnhuber, his wife, receives two sons: Günther Rudolf was born on the 19th of March, 1924 and Heinz on the 28th of December, 1925. The family resides in the house Villa Abtsberg 2.

1923 The hyper-inflation of this year shows its face. One US-Dollar counts in July 1914 still 4,20 Mark, in January 1923 quite 7.260 Mark and, in November 1923, already Mark. That makes the prices and salaries inside the Weyermann Company change weekly, later daily. In spite of this difficult situation the company grows up again. The former standard of the production will be achieved soon, while the storage capacity in Brennerstreet increases in this hyper inflation year.

1924 Carahell® and Caramünch® become registered trademarks, following the 1908 inscription of Carapils®. All these Weyermann brands within the brew specialties are nationally and internationally well known and registered all over the world.

1926 The Bavarian Government is interested in the prosperous Weyermann companies. Prime Minister Dr. Held appears on the occasion of the 16th Bavarian County Sports Event in Bamberg from the 16th until the 18th of July, 1926. He inaugurates the new sports ground beside the stadium while he is invited to be the guest of Rudolf and Adele Weyermann in their house. The University of Erlangen awards Rudolf Weyermann the title of a Dr. phil. h. c. in gratitude of his generosity during the construction of the university library. The fourth registered trademark of the Weyermann specialties is named Carafa®. It stands for high quality and the most careful production.

1926 The companies Mich. Weyermann, Bamberg, and Johann Baptist Weyermann, Potsdam, take part at the German Brew Exhibition with a special hop and barley show from the 18th of September until the 3rd of October ,1926 in Munich. The do have their own booth.

1927 Year of the death of Mrs. Commercial Councillor Sabine Weyermann, née Sippel. At the age of 71 the senior chief of the „Mich. Weyermann Farb- und Caramelmalzfabrik“ passes away and gets buried under great attention and sympathy of the Bamberg citizens into the Weyermann-Family grave. After the death of her beloved husband Johann Baptist Weyermann she totally retreated from the public life and engaged inside the Wellfare and the charity. Her merit was decorated with an amount of honours, for instance the so called Ludwigskreuz. Worker of both company parts carried her to grave. In remembrance of the merits of Dr. phil. h. c. Rudolf Weyermann regarding the aircraft construction in Bamberg a Messerschmidt-aircraft with a black ribbon flies above the Weyermann grave, guided by Baron von Conta. The children of Sabine Weyermann declare the „Kommerzienrat Sabine Weyermann Stiftung“, a 25.000 RM fonds for former and now retired Weyermann workers and employees.

1928 25th Anniversary of the „Farbmalzbier-Brauerei Johann Baptist Weyermann“ Company in Potsdam. Time to look back on an outstanding track record with Sinamar®.

1928 A thunderstorm on the 4th of August damages due to particular collaps of steam chimney the production machines of the „Farb- und Caramelmalzfabrik Mich. Weyermann“. The edge of the Bamberg „Hauptsmoorwald“ forest is moved back for more than 100 meter.

1928 Commercial Councillor Dr. phil. h. c. Rudolf Weyermann gets announced as a member of the German Museum Committee.

1929 50th Anniversary of the Mich. Weyermann Malt Specialties! From the very beginning until now it has been coming up a famous and worldwide known company which exports its highly regarded products in more than 30 countries all over the globe. The company celebrates from the 3rd of October on for three days its anniversary with a glittering festivity. Starting with the welcome party inside the brandnew celebration hall, which was designed by Gustav Haeberle too, a ceremony on the founders day takes place in the St. Otto Church leaded by the archbishop Dr. Jacobus Ritter von Hauch, which is joined by many of celebrities. Later Commercial Councillor Dr. phil. h. c. Rudolf Weyermann gets announced as a Senator of Honour of the Erlangen University. The government president von Strößenreuther emphasizes in his speech the great companies achievement against all obstacles of the world trade. Being grateful of all the employees performance the Mich. Weyermann Company inscenes a 100.000 RM fonds of employees purchase interests of real estates.

1929 The Weyermann-Family still helps in a generous manner during the non finished construction of St. Otto Church. While Rudolf and Adele Weyermann donate a pulpite on the occasion ot the Holy First Communion of their son Rolf, Carl and Fanny Weyermann order in the convent of Münsterschwarzach holy figures. All members of the Holy First Communion get invited for dinner into the Weyermann home and receive as a present a prayer book and a communion candle. Being grateful for hospitality and generosity, the members of the parish community say that it seems to be 1929 the face of Rolf inside the St. Johns figure on the pulpit.

1930 Commercial Councillor Dr. phil. h. c. Rudolf Weyermann receives the Golden Ring of Honour of the German Museum, which was opened in 1925, due to a special financial help that he accords to the German Museum as a patron.

1930 Commercial councillor Dr. phil. h. c. Rudolf Weyermann celebrates his 50th birthday. Because of his merits for common welfare he becomes the 16th Bamberg honorary citizen. He donates in the name of the company from 1926 to 1929 quite 360.000 RM for charitable purposes and social belongings. For scientific research he spends a complete brew laboratory for the University of Weihenstephan, equipped with a brewhouse, brew pan and a cooling device.

1933 The company under the NS-government – the fascistic movement comes over the Weyermann Company. The so called Third Empire integrates the both Weyermann firms in the centrally controlled economic system. The trading freedom does end. Weyermann Malt gets named as a coffee roasting company which delivers for the army.

1937 From 1937 to 1939 Rolf Weyermann has to serve the Reichsarbeitsdienst, a special by NS-Government created public working institution. From 1939 on he does his military inside the air defence in Italy, Kurland and Lithuania.

1939 Like a hundred thousand of other young men in the German country, the Weyermann sons have to join the military service. On of them will not come home. While Rolf becomes a prisoner of war of the Russians, Heinz is one of the Americans. He turns back in September 1946.

1939 Celebration of the 60th Anniversary on the 4th of October, 1939 in precarious times of the World War II start. The alimentation will be contingented to secure the regular common nutrition.

1941 Becoming a member of the fraternity Bavaria, Rolf Weyermann enters the Brew-University of Weihenstephan. Due to the fact of his fathers early death and the time of war he changes the university and moves to Erlangen. In the following year he marries his girl-friend since childhood, Irma Beck. In 1943 they have a son, Rudo. In 1948 follows Irmtraut, the daughter.

1943 Günther Rudi Weyermann, son of Carl and Franziska Weyermann, passes away near Charkow/Russia. Only 19 ½ years old, he served the antitank-company as a Lance Corporal.

1945 During an air raid, the railstation of Bamberg gets damaged like some parts of Brennerstreet too. A firebomb burns the truss of the administrative building. The truss as one of the oldest war damages will be reconstructed later, in 1992, following the ancient descriptions. The celebration hall becomes a quarter for the Berlin refugees, worker for the Siemens-Company, who try to find a new home in Franconia. The production of malt stops totally.
