On the 26th of February the quaint little town of Clarens in the Freestate hosted the first annual Craft Brewers Beer Festival, organized by Natalie from the local microbrewery “Clarens Brewery”. 300 tickets were sold in advance and many more joined this great event, blessed with sunshine. Over 20 South African microbreweries and homebrewers supplied the beer for the beer enthusiastic visitors. With entering the festival ground and paying the entrance fee, every guest received a branded glass, to stroll around from booth to booth and sip the different beer styles. Old established breweries took the chance to get in contact with loyal and new customers. New, upcoming breweries such as Pilansberg Brewery, didn´t miss out to advertise their product early, planning to open in December 2011. A qualified team of judges was busy the whole morning, tasting over 60 different draughts, to announce by the end of the day, that the De Garve Brewery got first with their Belgian Abbey style beer “Jolly Nun”. De Garve is based in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal Triangle, just south of Johannesburg. Patrick, the owner, is a loyal Weyermann ® customer and so we are proud, that one of our customers received the title “Beer of the day”. Congratulations! Nicole Feuring, our representative for Southern Africa, shared a booth with another customer of Weyermann ®, Leon van der Westhuizen. He runs a supplier shop for microbreweries and homebrewers. Countless questions from interested people got answered at the stand. Nicole was happy to meet lots of familiar faces during this special day and also to get in contact with brewers from all over South Africa, she hadn´t had a chance to meet before, many of them already brewing their beers with our specialty malts.
