As part of the Weyermann® academy Weyermann® employees with foreign background are presenting their home countries. This time it was Andrea Kundlers term, responsible for the marketing at Weyermann®. She provided an insight in her personal life in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).
Her colleagues learnt about the history, the politics as well as about typical products and the cultural life in the GDR. With many details about her personal life, it was easy imaginable for everybody how it must have felt to live in a quite special country under extreme circumstances.
Also sensible bits of the history, such as the border within Germany as well as the death strip and the restricted area were part of the presentation. She talked about the one party dictatorship, about the reprisal against all citizens who didn´t quite fit into the system, about the secret police (Stasi), political prisons, forced adoptions and many other subjects happening between the years of 1949 and 1990.
In contrast she also introduced her home country as a wonderful travel destination: The island of Rügen, the lake district of Mecklenburg, the cities of Stralsund, Potsdam, Erfurt and Leipzig and the Harz mountains – are just a few of the many interesting spots to visit.
Andrea Kundler talked about the daily live in the former GDR. A big difference to the western part of Germany these days was the fact that 87% of the women were working in the GDR. Their children spent the days in day care and already received their education towards socialistic personalities.
For all Weyermann® employees it was very interesting to hear that Weyermann® already delivered malt to the GDR in these days, mostly Caramünch® and Carafa® and this up to 500 tons per annum. This business was handled as an exchange for the high quality spring barley of the GDR and was organized through a company called Töpfer based in Hamburg together with a state combine in Berlin specialized in buying. The malt, packed in 50 kg bags, was picked up from two drivers of the GDR. If both of them agreed, they would even help loading for a few extra cents.
Today Weyermann® delivers malt to 269 customers in the region of the former GDR.
