24 new silos for the Weyermann® barley storage in Leesau

12.08.2011
Weyermann® invests in Leesau and the farmers in the area are grateful for an easier way of unloading their grains.
Leesau: Weyermann® is investing 3 Million EUR for the Barley storage. “The area around Leesau is a major growing area for malting barley. Weyermann® already started in 2004 to receive the grains from their farmers on the spot. This was quite a successful step but now the available 15 000 tons storage capacity is not enough anymore and we have to invest to expand it to 30 000 tons.”, explains Thomas Kraus-Weyermann, Weyermann® management. Around 80% of the grains are malting barley, the rest is wheat, spelt and rye as well as some organic grains.

Short distances for the farmers.
With this project the raw material supply will be enhanced and the company is helping the farmers to an easier and faster way of delivering their grains. Weyermann® is not the typical mass production company, it rather specializes in the production of specialty malts: Malt for brewing, roasted malt and caramelized malt. Many clients are also located around Leesau.
Karl-Heinz Bottler, the architect, talks about the eight free-standing silos, each holding 2000 tons plus additional 16 smaller silos each holding 450 tons. They will be all lined up in one row and will be fed by the already existing receiving machinery. The project will be divided into two phases of construction.

During the ground breaking a box was buried: Sabine Weyermann put a book of the company’s history in; the mayor, Dieter Hofmann had brought the chronic of Thurnau; some grains were placed in the box by Hans Lauterbach and the neighbor, Helmut Mittelberger, contributed an issue of the daily newspaper “Bayerische Rundschau”.
Farmer, Frank Prüfer, from Leesau is happy that the unloading on the spot will be also guaranteed in the future. He is thankful about the short distances for him as well as the possibility to unload late in the evening as well as on weekends.
Reinhold Ross from Fesselsdorf in the area of Lichtenfels is a hobby farmer and a passionate farmer for malting barley. But he is also questioning the investment and hoping that it will not influence the prices.
